Event Description

Now in its 37th year, the Bioneers Conference convenes activists, scientists, educators, artists, Indigenous leaders, and community organizers to share solutions and foster connections across social and environmental movements. Bioneers 2026 will offer main-stage talks, performances, in-depth discussions, hands-on workshops, an Indigenous Forum, youth programs, and collaborative opportunities over three days in Berkeley, California.

Each conference day includes a morning plenary at Zellerbach Hall beginning at 9 a.m., followed by afternoon and evening panels, interactive sessions, films, performances, and networking events at various downtown Berkeley venues.

If you are attending, don’t miss presentations from Beyond Benign Co-Founders Dr. John Warner and Dr. Amy Cannon on Saturday, March 28th:

  • Keynote: Dr. John Warner – “Biomimicry at the Molecular Level—Inventing a Sustainable Future” (March 28th, 9:40–10:02 a.m., Zellerbach Hall)  | In this talk, John will share his vision of how we can draw from the molecular design genius of nature, which has been running countless rigorous chemistry experiments for nearly 4 billion years, to create benign products and technologies that provide for human needs without contaminating the biosphere and endangering our health.
  • Panel: Green Chemistry Innovation and Education featuring Dr. John Warner and Dr. Amy Cannon (March 28th, 4:45–6 p.m.) | Our educational systems need to be transformed to prepare chemists and scientists to design more sustainable products. In this panel, John and Amy will share their work on key initiatives, such as the Green Chemistry Commitment, which equips universities to integrate green chemistry across curricula, research, and training. These initiatives and more are enabling a new generation of scientists to create breakthrough technologies that will enable a more sustainable, circular, and regenerative economy and society.

Hosting Organization(s)
Materials Research Society (MRS)

Event Description

Materials science is accelerating the transition to a sustainable future characterized by clean energy and a circular economy. As research rises to meet these global challenges, it becomes increasingly important to assess the potential impacts – economic, environmental, and social – of new innovations. This symposium will explore the integration of sustainability and societal considerations across material readiness levels: from research to development and ultimately deployment. Interdisciplinary talks will be solicited on key themes such as incorporating sustainability, economic, and social metrics into early-stage materials research; strategies for enabling circular material flows and minimizing waste; understanding the supply chain and social dimensions of materials; and case studies of the successful application of analysis to guide competitive clean and circular material development. Upon completion of this symposium, materials scientists and engineers will be equipped with a toolkit of resources and case studies to guide the evaluation and amplification of the broader impacts of their research.

Passive House

Event Description

Passive house’s reliable and superior energy performance with its myriad of co-benefits, is the cornerstone of the architectural solutions we require to be able to thrive. It is a firm foundation upon which we can build a regenerative society that repairs ecosystems damage, reverses it, and begins to increase all life.  There is a rising consciousness emerging revealing how comprehensive the field of sustainability is truly required to be if we are to meaningfully move towards regeneration. Only by broadening the lenses of our understanding can we take advantage of synergies of our actions across systems, and exponentially increase positive impacts.

For this year’s symposium, we invited you to submit proposals showcasing how passive house design relates to any aspects of regenerative design that are dear to your interests or practice.  We had an enthusiastic response from diverse locations and perspectives, all with inspiring examples of reaching for Regeneration and how Passive House was, or in some cases was not, a cornerstone of the strategy.

In the spirit of this symposium’s continual drive to integrate various disciplines through architecture, we also invited a scientist focused on Green Chemistry to close out the day and inspire us with efforts in that movement to address issues upstream.

Please join our tireless community for what we believe will be an inspiring, challenging, yet hopeful day!
