3rd Grade Animal Adaptations and Engineering Design
Summary
In this lesson, students will be asked to research animal homes from different environments. They will use their research in the final lesson of the unit to design a shelter based on animal homes that would keep them safe when exposed to severe weather.
File (PDF, PPT, image, etc)
Learning Goals/Student Objectives
- Determine how animal survival depends on environmental conditions.
- Examine how animal homes vary across ecosystems.
- Research animal shelters using print and digital resources.
- Identify structural features that support protection and survival.
- Prepare background knowledge for designing a shelter in Lesson 4.

Safety Precautions, Hazards, and Risk Assessment
-This is a research and worksheet-based activity with no chemical materials involved.
-Safety considerations include supervised internet use, safe handling of magazines or scissors (if used), and normal classroom expectations.
-No specialized hazard protocols are required.
NGSS Standards, if applicable
3-LS3-2 Use evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment.
3-LS4-2 Use evidence to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving, finding mates, and reproducing.
3-LS4-3 Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular environment some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive.
