Summary
In this lesson, students explore how nature removes salt from water and apply this understanding to the design of a sustainable desalination device. Students examine biological strategies used by animals and plants to manage salt, learn about three main desalination methods (crystallization, filtration, and distillation), and review evaporation using particle models. Working in teams, students use the engineering design process to sketch an evaporation-based desalinator and create particle models that explain how fresh water is produced. This lesson lays the conceptual foundation for prototype construction and testing in the final lesson of the unit.
Learning Goals/Student Objectives
- Describe multiple ways nature removes salt from water.
- Identify and compare different desalination methods (crystallization, filtration, distillation).
- Use sketches to show how parts of a desalination device relate to one another.
- Create particle models to explain evaporation and condensation within a desalinator.
- Apply the engineering design process to propose a sustainable desalination solution.

NGSS Standards, if applicable
3–5-ETS1-1: Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.

3–5-ETS1-2: Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints.

5-PS1-1: Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen.
