CHE 1110 Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Society UNSDG Presentation
Summary
In general and introductory chemistry courses, students typically learn the fundamental concepts of chemistry in isolation and often without connections to their interests or real life. The objective of a Chemistry learning community course (first year seminar style course) is to have student groups explore a topic from General Chemistry 1 through an accompanying learning community course. The course exposes them to Green Chemistry and UNSDGs at the start of the semester. They then plan group projects that they connect one UNSDG to a General Chemistry topic, and further to an area of interest to the students in the group. They are invited to include green chemistry applications, but are not required to do so. Students present in either a presentation format or a poster depending on the semester. This activity allows students to share something of interest to them with the connection to a General Chemistry concept, and an UNSDG.
