Universitätsspital Zürich

Bio

Samuele Giani is an accomplished chemical safety and risk management specialist with over 15 years of experience in laboratory safety, physical-, analytical chemistry, and dangerous goods compliance. Currently serving as the Chemical Safety Officer and Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor at University Hospital Zürich, he is responsible for leading safety programs, managing hazardous materials, and ensuring regulatory compliance across chemical operations.

Prior to this role, Stefano spent two years at Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, where he was an integral part of the risk management team. There, he focused on chemical and nanotechnology safety, training, audits, and emergency coordination.

His earlier career spanned over 13 years at Mettler-Toledo International, where he held multiple roles including Application Scientist and System Tester in thermal analysis. He contributed to global product development, customer training, application support, and compliance with international standards like ASTM and ISO.

Samuele holds a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Zurich and a Master's Degree in Molecular and Biological Chemistry from EPFL. He also holds advanced certifications in occupational safety (ASGS, Switzerland), dangerous goods safety (DGSA), and chemical safety (ACS).

Known for his expertise in risk assessment, training, ISO 45001 standards, and lab software systems, Samuele combines technical depth with a pragmatic approach to safety culture and compliance in high-stakes environments.

Ongoing Projects

  • Implementation of Comprehensive Chemical Safety Program
Leading the rollout of an institution-wide chemical safety strategy at University Hospital Zürich, including new protocols for storage, labeling, emergency response, and staff training. The program is aligned with Swiss and EU regulations and integrates lessons from audits and incident reviews.
  • Digitalization of Hazardous Materials Management
Coordinating the transition to a digital system for tracking and managing chemical inventories, safety data sheets (MSDS), and waste streams. This project aims to increase traceability, reduce risks, and improve compliance reporting.
  • Dangerous Goods Transport Compliance Initiative
Developing an internal auditing and documentation framework to ensure full compliance with ADR regulations for the transport of dangerous goods within and beyond the hospital's premises.
  • Cross-Institutional Safety Training Program
In collaboration other Swiss research institutions, designing and delivering specialized training modules on chemical safety, laboratory risk analysis (RAMP), and emergency procedures for lab personnel and safety officers.
  • Incident Response Optimization in High-Risk Laboratories
Overseeing the review and upgrade of emergency response plans for critical lab zones, including the integration of automated alerts, PPE protocols, and coordination with fire and medical response teams.
  • Sustainability in Chemical Waste Management
Partnering with environmental health units to streamline hazardous waste disposal processes while exploring more sustainable and cost-effective alternatives for chemical neutralization and recycling.
