Micheal Fultz
Associate Provost and Professor of Chemistry
West Virginia State University
Bio
Dr. Micheal Fultz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry. After joining the faculty at West Virginia State University in August of 2009 he began his teaching emphasis in Organic Chemistry and research focus in small molecule synthesis.
Dr. Fultz has taught courses ranging from Freshman Orientation, chemistry for nonmajors, Organic Chemistry, and Spectroscopic Methods. These courses are only one way that he interacts with students. He has mentored multiple students in the research laboratories culminating in student presentations at local, regional, national science meetings. He has written book chapters coauthored by students on organic reactions and organic heterocycles.
Dr. Fultz has been awarded grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Health sponsored West Virginia Idea Network for Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE), West Virginia NASA Consortium, and the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commissions Division of Science and Research for upgrading equipment, chemical research, student retention and recruitment studies, and enhancing retention efforts within the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
He has served as the advisor for the Student Members of the American Chemical Society Chapter since it was restarted in the Fall of 2009. Under his guidance the WVSU Chapter has won several nationally competitive awards and been awarded grants for travel and community interaction. The student members enjoy working with him in giving back to the community through outreach and service. This month Dr. Fultz took two students to New Orleans to accept the Outstanding Chapter Rating, which is the Highest Chapter Rating the ACS awards student groups, and the Green Chemistry Award for educating on the importance on sustainable chemistry practices. WVSU is only one of only a handful of institutions in the country that was awarded both.
Dr. Fultz enjoys getting out to the community and participating in educational activities. Being a first generation college graduate he worked hard at achieving his dreams of achieving a degree. This achievement inspires his work with students from Kindergarten to High schools seniors promoting a college education. Activities include hands on science projects, career days, and field trips to the University and surrounding community.
In addition to the numerous projects and committees he works on at WVSU he is also a member of the West Virginia Academy of Science and serves as the Chair of the local Kanawha Valley Section of the American Chemical Society.
Dr. Fultz earned a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Indiana University in 2009 under the guidance of Dr. David R. Williams and a Bachelor of Science degree (ACS Certified) in Chemistry from University of Tennessee Martin in 2003.
